Power Distribution Transformer

Power Distribution Transformer Design

A power distribution transformer works like all transformers, and they are design to reduce or increase the voltage.  It does this by transferring electric energy from one coil to another coil  by a process called electromagnetic induction.  Utilities companies use power distribution transformers to step-up or to increase voltage that is transferred through power lines.  When this high voltage electricity reaches a community, a step-down transformer reduces it power.  A distribution transformer is used again to make a final step-down in voltage to be usable in our homes and businesses.  A simple power distribution transformer has two windings, that are insulated from each other.  These two coils are wound on a common magnetic circuit of laminated sheet metal, called a core.  Each primary coil is connected to the incoming AC power source.  Each end of the secondary coil, which receives the energy, is connected to the outgoing power line.  The ratio between the number of windings in each coil determines whether the voltage will be stepped up or boosted or stepped down or diminished.  They are available in single and three phase configurations and are available in most every type of voltage.  If we did not have power distribution transformers you would not be reading this web site now, because they are the backbone of our electrical systems.

What's the Difference Between a Distribution Transformer and a Power Distribution Transformer
