Pole Mounted Distribution Transformer

We see pole mounted distribution transformers all over the country.  They are usually mounted on transmission electrical poles, and are the round type cylinder, grey container setting on the pole and in some cases at ground level.  Pole mounted distribution transformer are the breadbox transformers used to distribute the 120/240 voltage used in our home and low-volume commercial installation.  Common sizes are 16kVa to 100kVa and transformer voltage from 11,000 to 33,000 volts down to a low voltage used in our homes and businesses.  They are small in size and mass to make installation on the pole easy.  They are designed to take the exposure to harsh climate conditions and are very reliable.  Because of the high risk of lighting strikes they are installed with surge arresters that are fitted on mounting brackets welded to the transformer tanks.   Because they are used to step down voltage in many cases they are called step-down transformers.  They are usually single phase but are available in three phase.  For a large selection of pole mounted distribution transformers call TEMCo. 

A pole mounted transformer is design and most commonly used to convert 7500 volts to the 220/240v range, and reduces 11,000 to 33,000 volts down to 400 volts.  They are design with three wires that is connected to our homes.  Two are 120v lines one is ground.  They are wired in such a way to allow 120v service while still allowing the 220/240v service by ganging the two 120v lines to be used by dryers, ovens and water heaters.  Most common is the oil filled pole mounted transformer, which is used to insulate and protect wires from moisture and corrosion.  In some cases, the exterior of the container may have cooling vanes or fins to radiate excess heat to increase the life and provide more reliability to the transformer.  Most time the outer container is a special alloy that resist corrosion and the shape is design to limit accumulation of water and harmful chemicals.
