Distribution Transformer Design

In a distribution transformer design, there are three principal parts.  They are the coils, the magnetic core, and the tank.  Coils are usually copper or aluminum and are wound around a magnet, also called a winding.  The winding allows incoming currents to create a magnetic flux and produces a magnetic field.  The magnetic core allows the transfer of this magnetic field through the process of induction.  The tank is a protective container because often they are placed in hostile environments.  For more details on how they work and are design check out our page on Distribution Transformer Design.

Distribution Transformer Types

Many times distribution transformers are broken down into several categories.  One of these categories are the insulation used in  these transformers;  a dry type distribution transformer or a liquid or oil filled distribution transformers.  Smaller distribution transformers that do not create a lot of heat are built as dry type transformers.  Larger distribution transformers are oil transformers because they require an insulation oil to cool the transformer.  They are available in single phase distribution transformer and three phase.  They are mostly designed for three types of applications including Pole Mounted Distribution Transformer, Pad Mounted Distribution Transformers, and Integrated Substations Distribution Transformers.

Sizing a distribution Transformer
